ACADEMIC PROGRAMS...
University Programs
Each year KEI sponsors 16–20 half-day seminars on Korea at American universities across the country. KEI generally invites officials from the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Washington and the U.S. State Department to join with KEI, think tank experts, and local scholars in addressing timely issues pertaining to the Korean peninsula.
By engaging with local universities and their communities, KEI is better able to determine the local interest in Korea and assist those who wish to learn more. The institute has worked with universities to design programs that focus on topics such as economic issues, and security concerns facing Northeast Asia. The focus of the program depends on the specific interests of the individual university. KEI’s programs have brought in audiences of over 100 students, faculty and community members, and have aided universities in their development of Korea-related departments and programs. These events give students and faculty direct access to the experts and policymakers who are making many of the decisions affecting the U.S.-Korea relationship.

Academic Symposium
Each year, the Institute cosponsors a two-day conference focusing on Korea-related issues. The conference includes faculty and students from the host-university, as well as policy focused academics, think tank experts and policymakers from throughout the United States and Korea. The event consists of at least four panel discussions on various issues related to the U.S.-Korea relationship. During the program, participants directly engage with one another to develop solutions and challenge commonly held conceptions about the state of the relationship.
Past topics have included, the U.S.-ROK alliance and the DPRK; the movement of Korean “soft power” in East Asia; the consequences of a U.S.-Korea Free Trade Agreement; and the future of the US-ROK security relationship. Past University hosts have included: The University of Southern California, Harvard University, The University of Washington, The College of William and Mary, Stanford University, The University of Pennsylvania, UCLA, Johns Hopkins University, George Washington University, Georgetown University, University of Southern California, and University of Michigan. The 2008 Academic Symposium entitled, “Korean Pivot: Shifting Strategic and Political Relations with the Koreas” will take place in cooperation with the Center for Japan-U.S. Business and Economic Studies at the New York University.

Academic Paper Series | On Korea
KEI commissions roughly ten papers per year with diverse perspectives on original subjects of current interest to Korea watchers. Each paper is distributed individually as a KEI Academic Paper to over 2,000 government officials, think tank experts, and scholars around the United States and the world and subsequently collated into one volume, On Korea. Each author of a paper in the series is invited to come to Washington to present and defend his or her work before an interested audience of students, scholars, policymakers and friends of KEI.
For more information on the Academic Paper Series, or to learn more about submitting a paper proposal to KEI for the series, please contact Nicole Finnemann at nmf@keia.org.
